Family Empowerment through Horticulture
Friends of South Ministries – Uganda (Feds Uganda) Horticulture Project
The Friends of South Ministries – Uganda (Feds Uganda) Horticulture Project is a newly established project with an aim of fighting against diseases that affect children’s health through poor practices of feeding.
Sorting of onions before establishing a nursery bed
So far the ministry has established nursery beds with five vegetables, namely; Sukuma Wiki (“Collards”), Eggplants, Tomatoes, Onions, and African Best Drum head. When the seedlings grow to an appropriate size, many of them shall be transplanted to main gardens and sacks for easy monitoring.

Preparing garden with mixture of loam soil and fertilizers
Due to recent donations, along with the seeds, we were able to purchase the agricultural inputs such as Sprayers, Fertilizer boosters, Insecticide chemicals, to enhance on capacity building.

These vegetables are rich in nutrients. For example, Eggplants have excellent amounts of fiber, folate, potassium and manganese, as well as vitamins C, K, and B6, phosphorus, copper, thiamin, niacin, magnesium. Sukuma Wiki (“Collards” ) provide 58 percent of the vitamin C, 44 percent of the folate, 41 percent of the manganese, and 27 percent of the calcium needed on a daily basis.

As you can see the Feds Uganda Horticulture Project can greatly improve not only the children’s health, but also the health of the whole family. We expect by 2020 to make the existence of malnourished children in Siabona Village, located in Banda Sub County, a thing of the past.
