Fruit Growing
Am Wensongo Godfrey aged 39 years, a husband to Aguttu Louis registration number 12. I have seven children, of which they are below 18 years of age, living in Siabona Village in a single grass thatched hut.
My life used not to be the best before I had a mind of setting up my orchard at home. I could base only on peasantry farming as a major source of income to support my family. The source could be irregular most of the times hence creating a big gap in financing the educational and health sectors to my children.
Therefore I resorted to growing horticulture especially Mangoes and tomatoes at home. These two items also faced great challenges of improper market, frequent spraying, and storage systems. It also involved distance moving before selling these products to customers.
I would love to appreciate Friends of South Ministries Uganda for having enlightened us from poverty alleviation situations in our homesteads to make us what we are today. It has been in position to give and encouraged us to practice fruit growing. Among the fruits included crafted mangoes and oranges. This has boosted my immune system of my body and the family at large. My family is generally happy and currently we have 21 mangoes and four orange trees. This has encouraged me to maintain good nutrition through appropriate feeding practices at home.
Currently out of 21 mangoes five started yielding, and of which the fruits have ready for market. I do sell three mangoes at a fee of one thousand shillings only averagely; I earn two thousand shillings a day from the five mango trees which are already yielding. These funds have surely boosted my family in terms of fees issues at school and other basic needs at home.
However the major challenge is only spraying and monkeys that tend to destroy row ones.
I believe that from the orchard am in position to get a better business such as poultry or piggery as soon as possible. This shall help me to support my non registered and registered child up to university. So stand in pray with me to see that my plans come to pass in future.
